Ken Findlay

​Ken Findlay currently leads specialist consultation in ocean governance, blue economies, and ocean inclusive and sustainable development at AfriSeas. With a prior 30-year background in marine mammal science, Ken has played a lead role in whale, dolphin and dugong conservation and management across the Southern Hemisphere, including directing the University of Pretoria’s Whale Unit for a number of years. Realising a need to look at a bigger picture of human interactions with the oceans to advance conservation, he took up the Research Chair: Oceans Economy at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology from 2016. During this time, Ken worked extensively in the sustainable and inclusive blue economy arena, building a strong interest in ocean accounting, ocean sustainability, adaptive and evidence-based ocean governance and the blue financing thereof. He started AfriSeas in April 2023 to fill a consulting need in this area.

Dr Shannon Hampton

Shannon Hampton is a Research Officer at AfriSeas. She is an ocean governance expert with experience in marine ecology and policy research. Her diverse research interests include marine invasive species management, small scale fisheries, ocean governance, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, marine spatial management and science to policy interface. Her work, throughout Africa, has had a focus on capacity enhancement. She’s passionate about facilitating transdisciplinary partnerships to look at innovative ways to improve ocean governance and capacity for ocean governance in Africa.

Dr David Dyer

David Dyer is a the Projects Officer at AfriSeas and a marine ecologist specialising in the trophic ecology of coastal and estuarine ecosystems. He holds a PhD from the University of Cape Town, focused on the stable isotope ecology of South African kelp forests. Additionally, David has an strong interest in remote sensing, particularly in the potential of drones for mapping coastal ecosystems. David has been at AfriSeas since September 2023, assisting with the facilitation of a diverse set of coastal research projects across Africa. His experience and expertise are key to the AfriSeas core services of Data, Information and Knowledge Management, and Training and Capacity Enhancement.
